Thyroid

So my mom asked me yesterday if I thought I might have a thyroid problem. How this translated to my ears was, “Boy, your favorite winter coat sure is looking tight, why can’t you lose weight?” I find this an odd question since I’ve just lost 8.4 lbs, down 2.2 lbs in the last week. I’m still 4.2 lbs away from making my Holiday Challenge goal in 11 days. So, I guess you could say I’m hoping for a Christmas miracle. But, I’ve been meeting my eating and working out goals nonetheless. I think the reason why my mom’s comment bugs me so much is because she’s never said anything to me before about my weight, even though I’ve weighed this much before. So, why now?

That could be a strange question. Who knows her rationale I guess since we’re not in her head to see her thought processes. Great job on the progress though Pam!!
I’m overly cautious about my thyroid because my mom has a thyroid condition and takes daily medication for it. I have it tested yearly at my physical.

That’s hard, you are feeling like you are accomplishing something and then BAM someone says something that makes you question things. Perhaps someone she knows had a thyroid problem recently and maybe she felt this was some sort of advice she could give that she felt comfortable saying????
Anyway, congrats on your accomplishment so far – I am hoping it helps me to get my butt in gear to really start working out rather than a once a week type deal. Thanks for the motivation!!!

Unless your mom has a track record of commenting like that where there’s some sort of hidden meaning, don’t let it get to you. Actually, don’t let it get to you either way.
I remember when I reached 20 pounds lost. I was pretty proud of myself for that and mentioned it to my dad. His response: “Doesn’t look like it.” While that pissed me off a bit, he was sort of right. People didn’t really seem to take notice that I was dropping weight until I’d lost closer to 40-50 pounds, since by then you could “see it in my face” was the comment I heard most often.
Anyway, my point is that your doing this for yourself, so ultimately, the only opinion that matters is yours. So be happy with your progress so far and keep up the great work!

Great job on your progress so far Pam, especially during the holiday season. And way to keep on track with the fitness goals, too. I also have a mom with a lack of filters on her comments. Your mom is probably trying to “help” in her own way.
Absolutely agree with Mark’s last statement – do this for yourself, and keep up the great work!
